Rio Costilla

Rio Costilla in north-central New Mexico carries a Special Trout Water designation (Red chile) for the 2.4-mile reach from the Valle Vidal boundary downstream to Latir Creek. The river supports Rio Grande cutthroat trout, brook trout, and brown trout and is strictly catch-and-release; only artificial fly or lure with a single barbless hook is permitted. A valid New Mexico fishing license is required. River management is listed as private; contact the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish for current access and conditions. Photography is permitted.
