Alamo Hueco Mountains Wilderness Study Area

The Alamo Hueco Mountains Wilderness Study Area encompasses 15 miles of highly eroded volcanic mountains, mesas, vertical cliffs, and sinuous canyons in southeastern Hidalgo County, New Mexico, adjacent to the Mexico border. Managed by the BLM Las Cruces District, the area features juniper and oak brush vegetation with no maintained trails but offers backcountry access via NM Highway 81 south from Hachita, plus wildlife including javelina, Montezuma quail, desert bighorn sheep, mountain lions, and raptors.
