Angel Peak Scenic Area

Angel Peak Scenic Area spans over 10,000 acres of rugged badlands and deep canyons in San Juan County, New Mexico, approximately 15 miles south of Bloomfield. Managed by the BLM Farmington Field Office, the area centers on Angel Peak (elevation 6,988 feet), a distinctive sandstone formation composed of Eocene San Jose Formation rock. The landscape features colorful hoodoos, Kutz Canyon badlands, and distinctive geological layers of shale, mudstone, and fine sandstone from the Paleocene Nacimiento Formation. Three developed picnic areas and a nine-site campground sit along the canyon rim with overlooks of the badlands. Access is via County Road 7175 from US 550 (gravel-based; high-clearance vehicles recommended when wet). The area is open year-round with no entrance fees; spring and fall offer optimal conditions.
