Big Hatchet Mountains Wilderness Study Area

Isolated block-fault mountain range in southeast Hidalgo County's Bootheel, managed by BLM's Las Cruces District. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail passes through this Wilderness Study Area (18 miles long, trending northwest-southeast), rising to 8,366 feet at Big Hatchet Peak. Terrain transitions from desert shrubland below to piñon-juniper forest above, with characteristic Paleozoic limestone cliffs and Basin and Range fault-block geology. Supports desert bighorn sheep, bat colonies, and raptors. Trail access via cairn-marked route with no tread; no developed facilities.
