Chain of Craters Wilderness Study Area

Chain of Craters Wilderness Study Area is a cinder cone volcanic landscape with more than 25 cinder cones in Cibola County, New Mexico, located within El Malpais National Conservation Area near Ramah. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail passes through the area, traversing piñon-juniper woodland at lower elevations and ponderosa pine forest at higher elevations. Managed by BLM Rio Puerco Field Office. Access via County Road 42 from Highway 53 near Grants; the trail is marked with cairns but has no formal trailhead. Activities include hiking, dispersed camping, wildlife viewing, photography, and stargazing.
