Jornada del Muerto Wilderness Study Area
Wilderness Study Area in Socorro County managed by BLM Socorro Field Office, located approximately 45 air miles south-southeast of Socorro. The area is almost entirely composed of lava flows characterized by lava tubes, sinkholes, and pressure ridges. These volcanic formations support desert vegetation including grassland and soaptree yucca, and provide habitat for dark-colored reptiles and bats. Access is via Highway 380 near San Antonio, then County Road 153/Fite Ranch Road for approximately 23.5 miles, followed by cross-country hiking. Maximum stay is 14 days.
