Picacho Peak Recreation Area
Picacho Peak Recreation Area is a 4,959-foot volcanic peak northwest of Las Cruces in Doña Ana County, managed by the BLM Las Cruces District Office. The area features over 15 miles of mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian trails with views of the Mesilla Valley and Organ Mountains. The signature 1.5-mile trail ascends to the summit (hiking only), passing through rough volcanic terrain. The peak was formed by rhyolite lava that solidified approximately 35 million years ago. Two shaded picnic areas are available; no drinking water, restrooms, or trash receptacles are on-site.
