San Antonio Wilderness Study Area

The San Antonio Wilderness Study Area is located in northern New Mexico at approximately 8,400 feet elevation, managed by the BLM's Taos Field Office. A flat, grass and shrub-covered plain contains a gorge about 100 feet deep carved by the Rio San Antonio. Due to upstream diversions, the lower stretches of the river often dry in summer. The gorge includes sections with Douglas fir and spruce forest coverage. No established trails exist; visitors navigate uneven roads, flat plains, and old cow trails. The area is open year-round but the access road becomes impassable during inclement weather and heavy rains.
