  The San Juan River in northwestern New Mexico holds a Special Trout Water (Red chile) designation for the 3.5-mile reach downstream of Navajo Dam, managed by the BLM Farmington Field Office. The stretch supports rainbow trout and brown trout under catch-and-release-only regulations; only an artificial fly or lure with a single barbless hook is allowed, and fishing with more than 2 flies on a single line is prohibited. A New Mexico fishing license is required. Photography is permitted.

  The San Juan River Quality Waters below Navajo Dam in San Juan County, northwestern New Mexico, is a renowned tailwater trout fishery fed by cold, clear flows year-round. Stocked with rainbow trout and brown trout, the Quality and Catch-and-Release reaches carry special tackle and bag-limit rules that vary by section. A boat ramp is available; non-motorized watercraft only. There is no site access fee, though a valid New Mexico fishing license is required. Managed by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. Photography is permitted.
