Game Management Unit 29 in Otero County, south-central New Mexico, covers mostly vast desert plains at elevations roughly 4,500 to 7,280 feet, with the southern end of the Sacramento Mountains in the northwest and isolated volcanic peaks such as Wind Mountain. Huntable species include mule deer, pronghorn, Barbary sheep, oryx, and cougar; off-range oryx hunts are allowed on BLM, USFS, and state trust lands and on private land with permission. About 84% of the unit is public land — primarily BLM and state trust — with numerous roads branching from highways (4WD recommended). A valid New Mexico hunting license is required.
